CESASC Annual Convention Spotlights Legacy of Leadership While Betting on Future Innovators
LAPost/Arcadia, CA (April 25, 2026) — In a region long defined by technological ambition and cultural diversity, the Chinese-American Engineers and Scientists Association of Southern California (CESASC) convened its annual gathering Saturday, bringing together a cross-section of leaders in science, academia and industry under a theme that underscored both continuity and change: “Integrity, Innovation, & Impact.”
Founded in 1962, CESASC has evolved into one of the most enduring professional organizations serving Chinese-American engineers and scientists in Southern California. Over more than six decades, it has functioned as a conduit between research institutions, private industry and the broader community—helping to cultivate generations of talent while reinforcing the role of immigrant professionals in shaping the region’s technological landscape.
Organizers framed this year’s theme as both a reflection of institutional identity and a statement of intent. Integrity, they said, remains the cornerstone of professional trust; innovation, the engine of progress; and impact, the measure by which contributions ultimately endure. The message resonated in a moment when questions of ethics, technological acceleration and social responsibility increasingly intersect.
The convention’s gala program continued a longstanding tradition of honoring leadership within and beyond the organization. Among those recognized were Chairwoman Dr. Ying Zhan, President Dr. Lei Xu and Incoming President Dr. Kang-Shi (Kenny) Wang, alongside Achievement Award recipients Dr. Jonathan H. Jiang and Dr. Thomas Hou. Their work, spanning scientific research, institutional leadership and community engagement, reflects the breadth of CESASC’s influence. Notably, U.S. Representative Judy Chu attended the event and administered the oath of office for the incoming board members, underscoring the organization’s civic visibility and community ties. A congratulatory video message was also delivered by Lisa Lu, the veteran Hollywood actress who has long supported CESASC and established a dedicated scholarship through the organization.
Yet the event’s emphasis extended beyond recognition. A defining feature of CESASC’s mission has been its sustained investment in education—an effort that has quietly scaled over decades. The organization has awarded more than $400,000 in scholarships to over 400 students, with nearly $40,000 distributed this year alone across six categories. The funding supports not only academic excellence but also leadership development and community-minded initiatives.
That focus is reinforced through a growing portfolio of programs aimed at younger generations. From K–12 STEAM essay competitions to leadership-focused scholarships and AI-related initiatives promoting responsible innovation, CESASC has expanded its reach into earlier stages of the educational pipeline. Poster presentation platforms further provide emerging researchers with opportunities to showcase work in increasingly competitive fields.
The organization’s broader footprint reflects a hybrid model of professional association and civic actor. In addition to technical seminars and academic forums, CESASC has partnered with community-based organizations and nonprofits to support cultural programming and public service efforts, positioning itself at the intersection of science and society.
Its annual conventions have also served as a stage for global thought leadership. Over the years, the organization has hosted Nobel laureates and internationally recognized figures across disciplines—from physics and mathematics to film and forensic science—underscoring its role as a convening platform that transcends disciplinary boundaries.
As CESASC looks ahead, its leadership signals an intention to deepen international collaboration and expand interdisciplinary programming, particularly in areas shaped by rapid technological change. The goal, organizers say, is not simply to celebrate achievement, but to cultivate a pipeline of innovators equipped to navigate complex global challenges.
In that sense, the gathering in Arcadia was less a retrospective than a forward-looking exercise—one that sought to connect legacy with momentum, and recognition with responsibility.
