Arizona Set to Have Its First Female Senator
Arizona voters on Tuesday selected Republican Martha McSally and Democrat Kyrsten Sinema as their candidates for Senate in November, guaranteeing the state will elect a woman to the chamber for the first time. The two current U.S. representatives were among 20 women on congressional primary ballots in the state, nine Republicans and 11 Democrats.
In Florida’s primary there were 10 Republican women and 20 Democratic women vying to run for Congress in November. Sixteen of the Democratic women there will be on the state’s congressional ballot, including incumbents. Only two of the Republican women won their primaries, in part because six of the 10 were competing in the same primary.
Two of the three female Democratic candidates competing in run-offs for the congressional ballot in Oklahoma also won.
