New Library Tutoring Program for Young Learners Inspired by Supervisor Janice Hahn’s Board Motion Garners Interest from Over 1,500 Families

Summer Stars Offers Free In-Person Tutoring for Grades 1-6 in Reading and Math at Select Libraries, Including Many in the Fourth District

Los Angeles County, CA – Supervisor Janice Hahn is pleased to announce the launch of the new Summer Stars tutoring program at LA County Library, a vital initiative she championed through a Board of Supervisors motion that was unanimously approved. This program offers free in-person tutoring for students in grades 1-6. Developed in response to requests from parents and caregivers, this initiative aims to provide extra support in reading and math to help young learners excel.

“Summer tutoring can help prevent kids from falling behind and can set them up for success in the new school year, but tutoring can be expensive and out of reach for many families,” said Supervisor Hahn. “This new tutoring program we are launching this summer at our LA County libraries is completely free and is designed to meet a need in our communities. Our public libraries have always been important resources for families and young students, but this new program takes it to another level.”

Of the 33 locations offering tutoring, 11 are in the Fourth Supervisorial District, including the following libraries: Bell, Bell Gardens, Clifton M. Brakensiek, Cudahy, Hawaiian Gardens, Huntington Park, Leland R. Weaver, Los Nietos, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, and Sorensen. Demand from families has been strong since the program was first announced last week, with more than 1,500 interest forms received thus far.

“We are immensely grateful for Supervisor Hahn’s dedication and efforts in making in-person tutoring at our libraries a reality,” said LA County Library Director Skye Patrick. “Her commitment to our children’s education allows us to offer live, free in-person tutoring with credentialed tutors, helping students build essential skills for success.”

Participants in the Summer Stars tutoring program will select from two 4-week sessions in Reading (June 18 – July 11, 2024) and Math (July 16 – August 8, 2024) with the option to complete both sessions. Participants will have a 30-minute tutoring appointment Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each session during the 1:30 – 4:30 pm time block.

Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and space is limited. For more information on libraries where Summer Stars is available, and to complete an interest form, visit LACountyLibrary.org/summer-stars.
